The England Deaf Karting Association (EDKA) has achieved a historic milestone for deaf motorsport after entering into a long-term partnership with Motorsport UK, becoming the first deaf-led motorsport organisation in the world to receive official recognition and dedicated support from a national governing body.
The groundbreaking partnership represents a major step forward for accessibility and inclusion in UK motorsport, demonstrating a shared commitment to ensuring deaf and hard-of-hearing people have equal opportunities to participate, compete and thrive in karting and the wider motorsport community.
Over recent months, EDKA Chairperson Alan Thompson has worked closely with the Motorsport UK team to highlight the barriers often faced by deaf competitors, families and supporters. Following extensive collaboration, both organisations have formally agreed on a long-term partnership that provides funding, recognition and strategic support for EDKA.

The agreement officially recognises EDKA as the first deaf-led motorsport organisation in the world to receive support and recognition from Motorsport UK, marking a significant moment not only for the association but also for deaf sport internationally.
The partnership has been made possible through Motorsport UK’s ongoing commitment to improving accessibility across the sport and supporting initiatives aligned with its Vision 2030 strategy.
Dedicated to supporting deaf drivers, competitors, families and enthusiasts, EDKA continues to break down barriers and create pathways into motorsport for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The funding provided through this partnership will strengthen the organisation’s foundations and support its long-term development.
A key focus of the project will be the launch of a new EDKA website, designed to serve as a central hub for the deaf motorsport community. The platform will provide clear information, guidance and resources for those interested in karting and motorsport, while connecting members, sharing opportunities and strengthening community engagement.
Funding will also support EDKA’s continued growth as a recognised Motorsport UK-affiliated organisation, helping to build a stronger and more sustainable future for deaf participation in motorsport. In addition, 50 free KX licences will be made available to members, helping to reduce financial barriers and encouraging new drivers to begin or continue their motorsport journey.
Recognising the importance of effective communication at events, the partnership will also provide British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters where required. This will ensure deaf participants can fully engage with race briefings, official announcements and event communications, creating a more inclusive and accessible experience for all involved.
The announcement forms part of Motorsport UK’s Inclusion Grant programme, which awarded funding to four organisations dedicated to widening access to motorsport and supporting underrepresented communities. EDKA was selected alongside Greenpower, IntoSpeed and Quartermass, with Motorsport UK recognising the association’s work to improve accessibility for deaf participants and create sustainable pathways into the sport. The programme forms part of Motorsport UK’s wider Vision 2030 strategy to make motorsport more accessible, welcoming and representative for all.

Supporting Accessibility Across Motorsport
Commenting on the funded projects, Simon Wright-Jones, Sustainability Manager at Motorsport UK, said:
“Each of these organisations brought forward thoughtful, impactful ideas that align strongly with the principles of our Vision 2030 strategy. By making motorsport more accessible, we can welcome more people into the sport and enable them to enjoy it more often. We’re excited to see how these projects develop and the difference they will make.”
Alan Thompson, Chairperson of the England Deaf Karting Association, said:
“This is a truly historic moment for EDKA and the deaf motorsport community. We are incredibly proud to become the first deaf-led motorsport organisation in the world to receive official recognition and long-term support from Motorsport UK.
This partnership will help us grow our community, improve accessibility and create new opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing people to participate and succeed in motorsport. I would like to thank Motorsport UK for their commitment, support and belief in our vision for a more inclusive future.
Together, we are building real pathways into the sport.”
Building a More Inclusive Future
Through this landmark partnership, EDKA and Motorsport UK are working together to create lasting change, ensuring that deaf and hard-of-hearing people have greater access, support and opportunities within karting and motorsport.
As the first deaf-led motorsport organisation in the world to receive official recognition and dedicated support from a national governing body, EDKA’s achievement represents a significant milestone for both deaf sport and the wider motorsport community. The partnership lays the foundation for a more accessible, connected and inclusive future, creating opportunities for generations of deaf and hard-of-hearing people to participate and succeed in the sport.
